I Cor 14:21-26 – The Purpose of Tongues in the Assembly

I Cor 14:21-26 – The Purpose of Tongues in the Assembly

Problem: What were tongues for? What was the purpose of this gift? The one place in the New Testament which clearly sets forth the purpose of tongues is 1 Corinthians 14:22: “Wherefore, tongues are for a sign . . .”  The preposition translated “for” (eis) here denotes purpose. The verse is introduced by the particle “wherefore” (hoste), which means “for this reason, therefore.”  Paul’s explanation in verse 22 concerning the purpose of tongues is actually an inference based upon his words in verse 21. Therefore, the key to understanding the purpose of tongues must be found in 1 Corinthians 14:21. Verse 21 begins with these important words, “In the law it is written . . .”

1 Cor 14:1-20 – The Value of Tongues in The Assembly

1 Cor 14:1-20 – The Value of Tongues in The Assembly

1 Corinthians 14:1-20

Follow after charity [love], and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy (1 Corinthians 14:1).

Continuing his movement of thought from the previous chapter, Paul sets forth a command: “Follow after [run after, pursue, chase, as a hunter would chase after prey or as a runner would run to the finish line to receive a prize] love.” The reason is obvious: “Love edifies [builds up]” (1 Corinthians 8:1). Love seeks to please his neighbor for his good to edification (Romans 15:2). Love seeks the highest and best for the person loved. And God seeks the highest and best for His assembly. Indeed the highest and best gift is that of prophecy (forthtelling and communicating God’s truth to God’s people). Prophecy excels in edificational value!

What is Salvation?

What is Salvation?

Every rational human being recognizes that he has a “Threefold Need.” (1). In regard to YESTERDAY. Why? Because “yesterday” was the day of SIN. What are we to do with the past years? We cannot live them over again, nor balance them by “Works of” Supererogation.” (2). In regard to TO-DAY. If I have managed to provide for the sin of yesterday, what am I to do for today? For today if there is no change in my nature I will sin as yesterday. (3). In regard to TOMORROW. Suppose that I have been able to make provision for the past and the present, for yesterday and today, what am I to do for tomorrow? for tomorow will come with the same old forms of temptation, the same old suggestions to evil, the same helplessness to overcome sin as in the past. From this we see that we need PARDON for the Past, PURITY for the Present, and POWER for the Future. Where are we to get them?

1 Cor 13:11 – Act Like a Child

1 Cor 13:11 – Act Like a Child

Problem: Why does the Bible say to be like a child, but then to put away childish things?

Jesus told His followers that they were supposed to become like little children, yet Paul told his readers to stop acting like children.

Giving Jesus the first place in your life.

Giving Jesus the first place in your life.

Matthew 6:33 (King James Version)

33.But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

We all want to love God more than anything and give Him the priority in our lives but……The truth is that most of us aren’t there yet. Why?maybe because we don’t know that we love other things more than we love God.Love isn’t something you can show or give with word’s but with your acts.

1 Cor 3:8 – The Duration Of Tongues In The Church

1 Cor 3:8 – The Duration Of Tongues In The Church

Problem: 1 Corinthians 13:8

In 1 Corinthians 13:8 Paul makes this important statement: “Whether there be tongues, they shall cease [stop].” Tongues will cease! Paul thus predicted that this gift would stop and become inoperative. The big question which must be answered is when? When will tongues cease?

It would have been helpful had Paul been more specific: “Tongues shall cease one hundred years from now!” or “Tongues shall cease in 2000 A.D.” The apostle, however, gave no such date. Obviously, at the time when Paul wrote to the Corinthians (approximately 55 A.D.), tongues had not yet ceased. At that time, God was still giving this gift (1 Corinthians 12:10).

Jesus Loves Me

Jesus Loves Me

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

“When you get this concept into your mind and heart it will totally revolutionize your life.” That’s just the way the Lord said it to me. And just what is this revolutionary concept? His all-consuming, unconditional love for me. (And each of you can say the same.)

1 Cor 13:8 – When did the gift of tongues cease?

1 Cor 13:8 – When did the gift of tongues cease?

CHARISMATIC ANSWERS:

1) Tongues have not ceased. God is still giving the gift of tongues today just as He did in New Testament times.

or

2) The gift of tongues ceased early in the history of the church, perhaps at the end of the first century. However, in these last days the gift of tongues has reappeared and God is once again giving this gift.

Christian Tee Shirts – What Statement Are You Making?

Christian Tee Shirts – What Statement Are You Making?

Clothes make the man, or so the saying goes. There’s a certain amount of truth to that– the clothes you wear do make a statement. They tell people a little about the way you think and feel, and it’s definitely part of the first impression you make when you meet someone. If you wear all black, that says one thing; if you only wear bright colors, that says something else. So what if there were a way to make a conscious statement, a way to signal your faith in a trendy, cool way.

1 Cor 13:4 – Love is not Jealous, so Why is God?

1 Cor 13:4 – Love is not Jealous, so Why is God?

Problem: The argument goes something like this: (1) 1 John 4:8 indicates that “God is love;” (2) 1 Corinthians 13:4 says that “love is not jealous” (NAS); and yet (3) Exodus 20:5, along with several other passages, reveals that God is “a jealous God.” “How,” the skeptic asks, “can God be jealous when several verses say God is love and 1 Cor. says love is not jealous?” (McKinsey, 1992). Simply put, if love is not jealous, and God is love, then God logically cannot be called jealous. Or conversely, if love is not jealous, and God is jealous, then God cannot be considered loving. Right? How can these verses be anything but contradictory?

Defense of Christianity Using the Resurrection

Defense of Christianity Using the Resurrection

Why is the death, burial, and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ such a big deal? Why didn?t Jesus just die like everyone else and go to Heaven and wait for us there? Why did it have to be so gruesome and public, His death, His burial, and His resurrection? Because it validates everything Jesus said while He was on earth, it validates everything he taught and shared for three years.

1 Cor 12:13 – Spirit Baptism

1 Cor 12:13 – Spirit Baptism

Problem: The key passage on Spirit baptism is found in 1 Corinthians 12:13-“For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” The “ONE BODY” spoken of in this verse refers to the Church (see 1 Cor. 12:27-28; Eph. 1:22-23; 5:30-32; Col. 1:18), the Body of which Christ is the Head. Spirit baptism is defined in 1 Corinthians 12:13 as that work of God whereby believers are baptized (immersed, placed) into Christ’s body, the church. How then does a believer become a member of the body of Christ? It is by Spirit baptism.
