Problem: This text says Esau was asked by Jacob to “sell” him the birthright. But Genesis 29:1ff tells how he got it by deception.
Solution: Jacob purchased the “birthright,” but he got the “blessing” by deception. These are distinct things. So there is no real discrepancy.
“And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me? And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. (Gen 25:31-33)”
