Kelly Powers (Protestant) vs Andy (Roman Catholic) debate on the Immaculate Conception of Mary! The central question is: IS ICON VENERATION BIBLICAL? A key issue in this debate is the distinction Eastern Orthodox Christians make between veneration and worship. Orthodox Christians maintain that veneration of icons is not the same as worship, which belongs to God alone. They understand veneration as showing honor and reverence to the person represented by the image, rather than treating the physical image itself as a deity. But does this distinction adequately address the biblical concerns about religious images, bowing before them, kissing them, and offering acts of devotion, or does Scripture establish boundaries that challenge these practices? What does the Bible actually teach about worship, idolatry, images, and the proper way to honor God? The important question is not simply whether Orthodox Christians distinguish veneration from worship, but whether that distinction and the practices associated with it are biblically justified. Protestant Dilemma exposes Sola Scriptura? One of the arguments I hear from Roman Catholics, and even from Sam Shamoun, is that Sola Scriptura is supposedly destroyed because Protestants have to trust the Roman Catholic Church to know what the Bible is, because “the Catholic Church gave us the Bible.” But that argument confuses recognizing Scripture with creating or giving Scripture its authority. The New Testament books were not written and then sitting around waiting for a fourth century Catholic Church to decide whether they would become God’s Word. These writings came from the apostles and their associates, were circulated among the churches, read publicly, copied, taught from, and recognized as authoritative long before the councils of Hippo and Carthage. In fact, Athanasius of Alexandria listed the exact 27 books of our New Testament in AD 367 twenty six years before Hippo. So the historical evidence does not support the idea that a Roman Catholic council created the 27-book New Testament. Sola Scriptura also does not teach that Christians don’t need the church, pastors, teachers, tradition, or even church councils. Of course God used the early church to preserve, transmit, examine, and recognize the apostolic writings. But recognizing an authority is not the same thing as creating that authority. The church did not make Matthew, John, Romans, or Revelation inspired; God inspired Scripture. The church recognized what it believed to be the writings that carried apostolic authority. We can also affirm that God providentially guided fallible Christians through wisdom and discernment. Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12 that the Holy Spirit gives gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and discernment. So there is nothing contradictory about believing that imperfect Christians, guided by God’s providence and the Spirit’s gifts, could rightly recognize the books that God had already inspired without claiming that those Christians or councils were themselves infallible. Therefore, the statement “the Catholic Church gave Protestants the Bible, therefore Sola Scriptura is destroyed” simply does not follow. The real question is not, “Did Christians recognize the canon?”Of course they did. The question is, “Does the fact that the church recognized Scripture prove that the church itself possesses an infallible authority equal to Scripture?” That conclusion has to be demonstrated; it cannot simply be assumed. The Bereans in Acts 17:11 were commended for examining teaching by the Scriptures, and Paul warned in Galatians 1:8 that even an angel should be rejected if he preached a different gospel. So my position is not that the church is unnecessary. My position is that God is the Author of Scripture, the apostles were the authoritative messengers who gave us the apostolic writings, and the church recognized and preserved those writings. The church is a witness to the canon not the creator of the canon or the source of Scripture’s divine authority. Therefore, the historical recognition of the New Testament canon does not destroy Sola Scriptura. Protestant Dilemma exposes Sola Scriptura? One of the arguments I hear from Roman Catholics, and even from Sam Shamoun, is that Sola Scriptura is supposedly destroyed because Protestants have to trust the Roman Catholic Church to know what the Bible is, because “the Catholic Church gave us the Bible.” But that argument confuses recognizing Scripture with creating or giving Scripture its authority. The New Testament books were not written and then sitting around waiting for a fourth century Catholic Church to decide whether they would become God’s Word. These writings came from the apostles and their associates, were circulated among the churches, read publicly, copied, taught from, and recognized as authoritative long before the councils of Hippo and Carthage. In fact, Athanasius of Alexandria listed the exact 27 books of our New Testament in AD 367 twenty six years before Hippo. So the historical evidence does not support the idea that a Roman Catholic council created the 27-book New Testament. Sola Scriptura also does not teach that Christians don’t need the church, pastors, teachers, tradition, or even church councils. Of course God used the early church to preserve, transmit, examine, and recognize the apostolic writings. But recognizing an authority is not the same thing as creating that authority. The church did not make Matthew, John, Romans, or Revelation inspired; God inspired Scripture. The church recognized what it believed to be the writings that carried apostolic authority. We can also affirm that God providentially guided fallible Christians through wisdom and discernment. Paul teaches in 1 Corinthians 12 that the Holy Spirit gives gifts of wisdom, knowledge, and discernment. So there is nothing contradictory about believing that imperfect Christians, guided by God’s providence and the Spirit’s gifts, could rightly recognize the books that God had already inspired without claiming that those Christians or councils were themselves infallible. Therefore, the statement “the Catholic Church gave Protestants the Bible, therefore Sola Scriptura is destroyed” simply does not follow. The real question is not, “Did Christians recognize the canon?”Of course they did. The question is, “Does the fact that the church recognized Scripture prove that the church itself possesses an infallible authority equal to Scripture?” That conclusion has to be demonstrated; it cannot simply be assumed. The Bereans in Acts 17:11 were commended for examining teaching by the Scriptures, and Paul warned in Galatians 1:8 that even an angel should be rejected if he preached a different gospel. So my position is not that the church is unnecessary. My position is that God is the Author of Scripture, the apostles were the authoritative messengers who gave us the apostolic writings, and the church recognized and preserved those writings. The church is a witness to the canon not the creator of the canon or the source of Scripture’s divine authority. Therefore, the historical recognition of the New Testament canon does not destroy Sola Scriptura.
