Problem: David writes, “O how I love Your law! It is my meditation all the day” (Ps. 119:97), and elsewhere, he writes, “His delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night” (Ps. 1:2). However, Paul states that we are no longer under law (Rom. 6:14; 7:6). Is the law good for our spiritual growth or bad?
Solution: We have already argued elsewhere that the moral law has good uses and bad uses for spiritual growth (see Romans 7:6). However, in addition, we can add that the Hebrew word torah (or “law”) could refer to the moral law or to the Bible. Therefore, the psalmist could be arguing that the Bible itself is a means of growth. The NT also uses “the law” to refer to the whole Bible (Jn. 10:34). Jesus was quoting Psalm 82:6.
