Problem: The Bible places a high value on both faith and hope. The author of Hebrews explains that it is impossible to please God without faith (Heb. 11:6). Paul writes, “Whatever is not from faith is sin” (Rom. 14:23). However, Paul states that love is greater than faith and hope. Why does he say this?
Solution: While the Bible places a high value on faith, love is even more important. The greatest commandment is to love God and our neighbor (Mt. 22:37-40; Jn. 13:34-35). Moreover, in eternity future, faith and hope will be unnecessary, which is the context of this passage (v.12). When we are in the presence of God, we will have no need for faith or hope. However, our experience of giving and receiving love will continue forever.
“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity. (1 Cor 13:13)”
