Strength in Surrender

From films to social media to sports, our culture often celebrates pride over humility, sarcasm over vulnerability, and self-reliance over a genuine awareness of our need for God. Yet Scripture turns that narrative upside down. The Bible reveals a God who longs to pour His strength into our lives—but that can only happen when we recognize our weakness and acknowledge our emptiness apart from Him. As Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).

Thankfully, Scripture also shows us ways to resist “me, me, me” culture and cultivate humility, such as:

Spend time with God. Study Scripture. Pray often. The more clearly we see God’s holiness and greatness, the more accurately we see ourselves. (Isaiah 6:5; John 15:5)
Every day, ask for God’s wisdom and guidance. Pray and submit to God even when you don’t feel like it. (Proverbs 3:5–6)
Thank God for every good thing. (James 1:17)
Confess your weaknesses and accept correction. You can’t be good at everything—and that’s okay. Notice and admit what you struggle with, then watch God display His power. (2 Corinthians 12:9–10)
Put others before yourself. Follow Christ’s example by seeking the good of others above your own interests. (Philippians 2:3–4)

Humility is not weakness. It is the willingness to place yourself in God’s hands, trusting Him to accomplish through you what you could never accomplish on your own.

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”

— James 4:10
