Geocentricity is a conceptual model of the form of the universe which makes three basic assertions about the nature of the earth and its relationship to the rest of the universe. These are:
a. the earth is the center of the universe
b. the earth is fixed (i.e., immobile) in space (Geostationarity)
c. the earth is unique and special compared to all other heavenly bodies.
A geocentric model of the universe seems first to have been formalized by Ptolemy, the famous Greek astronomer who lived in Alexandria around A.D. 130. Ptolemy’s model envisioned each planet moving in a small circle, the center of which moved along a large circular orbit about the earth. This model was generally accepted until Copernicus published his heliocentric model in 1543. [This model teaches that the Sun, and the whole universe, revolves around the Earth, but the planets in our Solar System still revolve around the Sun; but, the Earth is not a planet, since this term implies a moving object.]
The heliocentric view pictures the sun as motionless at the center of the solar system with all the planets, including the earth, in motion around it. Copernicus’ heliocentric model, because it used circles to describe the orbits of the planets about the sun instead of ellipses, was as clumsy and inaccurate as Ptolemy’s geocentric model. However, it was conceptually simpler. It quickly gained acceptance, though not without considerable controversy. The conflict between these two views came to a head in the well-known trial of Galileo by the Inquisition in 1632.
The assertion that the earth is unique and special is clearly and unequivocally taught in the first chapter of Genesis (assertion ‘c’ above). The plain sense of the creation account is that all other heavenly bodies were not even brought into existence until the fourth day of creation. Thus, God had already created the earth, separated the waters above and below the atmosphere, formed the earth into continents and oceans, and brought forth vegetation upon the earth before He paused to create the solar system, the Milky Way, and all of the other material bodies in the universe. It is very clear that the creation of the earth was distinct from that of any other heavenly body. The Biblical doctrine of the uniqueness of the earth is strongly supported by modern space exploration. In particular, every effort by scientists to demonstrate that life does or possibly could exist on other planets in our solar system has so far failed.
In contrast to the bountiful evidence in the Bible which teaches that the earth is special, nowhere is it taught [in scripture] that the earth is the center of the universe (assertion ‘a’ above) [(the Geocentricists focus on the Sun rotating around the Earth, but that is just within this Solar System; there are 500 Solar Systems in the Milky Way that have been discovered so far; there are over 100 billion galaxies estimated to be in existance]. In fact, the Bible provides no explicit teaching on any questions relating to the form of the universe. We are not told, for example, whether the universe is finite or infinite, and no explicit statement can be found to help us know whether space is flat or curved. This is the type of information we would need to deduce whether the earth is at the center of the universe or if it even makes sense to say that the universe has a center. On matters relating to the physical form of the universe, the Bible is mute.
This leaves the more controversial assertion (“b” above) that the earth is motionless in space to be discussed. In fact, the Bible contains no explicit teaching on this matter either. Nowhere does the Bible set about to deal explicitly with the question of whether the earth is moving through space or not.
Evidently, while the physical form of the universe is an interesting scientific issue, it is not of very great importance Biblically. The lack of explicit Biblical teaching on this whole matter makes it impossible to call any conceptual model of the form of the universe “the Biblical view.”

There is an indicator that the Earth is rotating in space. The fact that low pressure regions spin with an anticlockwise motion in the Southern hemisphere, yet in the Northern hemisphere the high pressure regions spin with an anticlockwise motion and vice versa raises the question as to what force is being exerted on these winds. Studies of rotating bodies show there is an apparent coriolis acceleration, which acts sideways on moving objects. Only a coriolus type acceleration seems to explain the Earth’s winds and this could only occur if the Earth rotates. The fact that the wind direction is always constant is evidence of the Earth’s consistent rotation. (answersingenesis.org/articles/cm/v8/n2/planets)
There also is a Galactocentric model which states that our Galaxy is the center of the Universe, but, within it, it follows the Heliocentric model.
Geocentric verses range from those with only a positional import, such as references to “up” and “down;” to the question of just what the earth was “orbiting” the first three days while it awaited the creation of the sun; to overt references such as Ecclesiastes 1, verse 5:
The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.
Perhaps the strongest geocentric verse in the Bible is Joshua 10:13:
And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day.
As well as Isaiah 38:8
Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.
(Mantua Country Baptist Church)
Another powerful example is found in Malachi 4:2
But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings…
Notice how “Sun” has a capital “S”. This obviously refers to the Lord Jesus Christ. He did arise with healing in his wings. Notice how it does not say “Son”, it says, “Sun”. If the “sun” dpes not rise, does this mean that the Son did not rise? He did rise, and so does the Sun. (Jesus-is-lord.com/geocentr.htm?vm=r&s=1)
There are 50 references in the Bible to the Sun going up or down (rising or setting).
The Earth is independent of everything else in the Universe:
Job 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
And why should the Bible say, “He…hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job 26:7), if in fact the earth is not hanging on nothing, but whirling around at a hundred thousand kilometres per hour on the end of a gravitational cord of billions of tons of attraction from the sun? (amazingdiscoveries.org/C-deception-geocentric-evolution-solar_system?vm=r&s=1)
Geocentrics love to point out that is no place in the Bible that says the Earth orbits the sun or rotates, while this is true there is also no place in the Bible that says the sun orbits the Earth.
The absolute truth is that the sun and the Earth move relative to each other, but there are different ways of describing that relative motion and the Bible describes it from an Earth bound perspective.
NASA has pictures from Pathfinder on Mars showing a ‘sunrise’ and a ‘sunset’. Some might try and make the claim then that Mars is the center of the universe.
While the Bible is was written by God, He use human writer, writing to human readers, so it makes since that God would use our perspective in referring to the relative motion of the Earth and sun.

The main difference [between the two models] is that geocentric models must always take the existence of the universe into account whereas heliocentric models always ignore it. Other than that, the differences between heliocentrism and geocentricity are philosophical and theological.

Christian geocentrists find their most vociferous opponents are fellow Christian creationists to whom geocentricity comes as a shock. They do not want to be tarred with such a heretical brush that will only increase the great ridicule they are already receiving for their stance against evolution? (Jesus-is-lord.com/geocentr.htm?vm=r&s=1)
A rotating Earth would have to be moving fastest at the equator and slowest near the north and south poles. But there is no difference in speed at any point on the Earth’s surface, whether north of, south of, or at the equator. Therefore, the earth is stationary – not rotating about its polar axis.
The gaseous atmosphere, if rotating with the earth, would exhibit properties for which the centrifuge is made: Heavier elements and molecules would be driven outward. That means there would be relatively more oxygen than hydrogen at high altitudes, and more hydrogen than oxygen (by percentages) near sea level. That is because oxygen is heavier than hydrogen. And the result does not agree with reality (that says the percentage of oxygen stays the same with altitude – just the amount decreases). And that would mean that life as we know it on earth would not have survived.
[The Earth is a sphere, not a perfectly round ball. Thus, at the Equator the circumference is at its widest and at the poles it would be relatively zero. Scientists believe that the Earth rotates on its polar axis.] If the Earth rotated about its polar axis, it would have to be moving fastest at the equator and slower at each mile closer to the north and south poles. Theoretically, the tiny point at each pole would not be moving at all.
If the Earth was rotating about its axis, someone in Quito, Ecuador would be traveling twice as fast from west to east as someone in Oslo, Norway – at any moment, and at every moment. Meanwhile, someone looking at the proverbial North P ole, would hardly be moving at all!
If the Earth was rotating as we are told (i.e., from west to east in direction), an airplane would have to travel much faster to fly from Los Angeles to Miami than from Miami to Los Angeles. And the required speed to fly west-to-east at cities close to the equator would be much greater than speed needed to go from, say, Toronto to Moscow (since the Earth’s speed of rotation closer to the North Pole would be less than farther to the south).
(genesis-creation-proof.com/Earth-is-stationary.html)
The earth revolves around the sun once a year. It also rotates on its axis every 24 hours. These motions add together in a dizzy combination. The earth’s spin results in a surface speed of 1,000 miles per hour at the equator. The speed of the earth due to orbital motion around the sun is 66 times greater still. This is 30 times faster than a rifle bullet. During an average human’s lifetime (70 trips around the sun), 41 billion miles are traveled. While you read this page, the earth has already traveled more than 1,000 miles! Fortunately, we do not directly notice this motion since the earth’s faithful gravity force ensures that both its atmosphere and inhabitants remain firmly in place. However, earth’s motion is clearly shown by the westward movement of the sun, moon, and stars through the sky (see table 1). (answersingenesis.org/articles/1997/11/05/astronomy-bible)
Many experiments were performed specifically to demonstrate and measure the motion of the earth around the sun.
To everyone’s surprise and grief all of them gave the speed of the earth’s movement through space to be a stunning zero. No significant movement could be measured at all. The most famous of the experiments was done by Michelson and Morely. Typical of comments on their results are those of Bernard Jaffe:
“The data were almost unbelievable. there was only one other possible conclusion to draw, that the earth was at rest. This, of course, was preposterous.”
As “preposterous” as the measurements of Arago, Trouton and Noble, Airy, Thorndyke and Kennedy, Theodore de Coudres, and several others. They also found the earth to have a zero velocity through space.
One of South Africa’s most highly respected scientists, world-renowned cosmologist Professor George Ellis, noted this:
“I can construct you a spherically symmetrical universe with Earth at its centre, and you cannot disprove it based on observations.” ….Nor can you prove it by observations.
