Most people think Jehovah’s Witnesses are still saved even though they don’t believe Jesus Christ is God.
It’s not enough to say, “We believe in Jesus.” The question is: which Jesus?
The Jesus of the Bible is eternal, uncreated, and uniquely God.
But the Jesus in JW teaching is different.
They say He is a created being, not eternally God in the same way. They do not believe that Jesus Christ is God Almighty in the flesh. The Jesus in their doctrine is Angel Michael and is not God, the Creator. Their Jesus does not receive worship. This is what they believe.
That’s not a small difference at all. This is a completely different identity and belief system. Their christ is not the Christ of the Bible.And this is exactly why Paul the Apostle warned about another Jesus and another gospel.Using the same name doesn’t make it the same person.
If you believe in a false Christ, you cannot have true salvation.
People would often ask: “Where in the Bible does it say if you don’t believe Jesus is God you won’t be saved?”The Bible doesn’t reduce salvation to just a single sentence. It presents a Person you must believe in—and that Person is revealed in a specific way.
1. You must believe the true identity of Jesus
John 8:24 — “If you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.”
That “I AM” is not casual—it’s a claim tied to God’s own identity.
Translations like the King James Version or New International Version sometimes add “he” to smooth the sentence in English: “If you do not believe that I am he, you will die in your sins.”
But “he” is added by translators—it’s not in the original text.
So what is Jesus actually saying?
When Jesus says “I AM,” it strongly echoes Exodus 3:14, where God reveals Himself to Moses:
“I AM THAT I AM” (Hebrew: Ahayah Esher Ahayah Asher). So in John 8:24, Jesus isn’t just saying “I am the Messiah” in a casual sense. The original Greek says “I AM,” not “I am he.” The “he” is added by translators. And while the phrase can function contextually as “I am he,” it also carries a deeper echo of God’s self-revelation in Exodus 3:14—especially when read alongside John 8:58.
So to be specific: Who does Jesus Christ say He is?
Revelation 1:17 — “Fear not; I AM THE FIRST AND THE LAST.”
This is Jesus speaking in Revelations.
Now compare YAHWEH speaking in Isaiah:
Isaiah 44:6 — “I AM THE FIRST, AND I AM THE LAST; and beside me there is no God.”
In Isaiah, Yahweh calls Himself the same thing. In fact, Lord Jesus Christ is repeating the very same thing. He calls himself the first and the last, just as written in Isaiah.
Also remember, YHWH in Isaiah says there’s no God beside him. This means, whoever is first and the last is God by himself. Because Lord Jesus Christ claimed to be YAHWEH, he cannot be another god.
Then again:
John 8:58 — “Before Abraham was, I AM.”
This is crucial. Again, Jesus uses the same divine name revealed in Exodus 3:14.
That means in these verses, Jesus is identifying Himself with the God of Abraham and Moses.
2. The gospel you believe includes who He is
Romans 10:9 — “If you confess… the Lord Jesus… you will be saved.”
So you confess who? The Lord Jesus Christ. “Lord” here is Kyrios—the same title used for God.
When YHWH was read aloud, it was rendered as Adonai. When translated into Greek (the Septuagint), it became Kyrios—Lord.
Paul makes it even clearer:
Romans 10:13 — “Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
You would think that’s a random line in Paul’s letter until you realize that it’s a direct quote from the old testament:
Joel 2:32 — “Whoever calls on the name of YHWH shall be saved.”
Paul applies that YHWH passage to Jesus.
So we must believe that Jesus Christ is YHWH—God Almighty.
Not a lesser being. Not an angel.
Scripture directly calls Him God:
Titus 2:13 — “Our great God and Saviour Jesus Christ.”
Also important, the old testament says ONLY YHWH can save. Apostle Paul calls YHWH God and SAVIOUR, revealing the old testament. If the one you trust for salvation is called God, then denying that is not a small detail—it’s rejecting His revealed identity. We really must be careful of false christs.
2 Corinthians 11:4 talks about “Another Jesus… ” and “another gospel…”
So yes—it is possible to believe in a version of Jesus and still miss the real one.
The Bible does not say: “Say this exact sentence: ‘Jesus is God’ to be saved.”
But it clearly shows:
The Jesus who saves is YHWH
He carries the identity and authority of YHWH
Believing in a reduced or altered version of Him is believing in another Jesus.
So the question is:
Are they trusting the Jesus the apostles revealed—or a different one?
It is important to know who a Christian truly is. A Christian is not someone who merely says he is one. A Christian is a son of God, one who has eternal life, the very life of God.
To become a child of God, you must be born again.
So how do you receive eternal life?
John 17:3 — “This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
Those who have eternal life are the ones truly called Christians. And to receive eternal life, you must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as the foundational apostles did. You must believe in Jesus Christ as revealed by the foundational apostles— as God Almighty, not a lesser being.
