Proverbs 6:16-19 – Does God hate people or love them?

Problem: The Bible tells us that God both loves people and hates people. Whether we like it or not the Scriptures teach that God hates those who love violence and love evil. God is too holy to approve of those who love what is opposite to God’s character and nature. But on the other hand, generically speaking, God loves the whole world (John 3:16). Also, he lets the sun shine on the good and the bad. He let’s the rain fall upon all people. So, in this context, he loves all (Matthew 5:43-48).

Proverbs 4:7 – Should we acquire wisdom or not?

Problem: Should we acquire wisdom or not? Context is vital here.  Proverbs 4:7 is stating that a person, on the human level, needs to acquire wisdom.  It is good to seek to be wise.  Solomon is teaching his son, who is a believer in God and His word, to avoid foolishness and seek wisdom. Of course, true wisdom is acquired from God’s word.

Psalm 137:9 – Why does the Psalmist speak about killing children?

Why does the Psalmist speak about killing children? Critics often bring up this verse as an attack on the validity of the Bible, but does the Bible teach that it is okay to kill children?  The answer, of course, is no it doesn’t.  We must ask what the Psalmist was saying and why he was saying it.

Psalm 137:9 – What about the “Cursings” in the Psalms?

Problem: Sprinkled throughout the psalms, we read shocking prayers that are made to God from the respective psalmist. These are called the “imprecatory psalms” by theologians, because these prayers seem to invoke cursing on the enemies of Israel:

Psalm 115:17 – Can the dead praise God or are they unconscious?

Problem: As in this passage, the Bible often speaks of death as the time when one “sleeps with his fathers” (e.g., 1 Kings 2:10; 11:21, 43; 14:20, kjv). Jesus said, “Lazarus sleeps” (John 11:11) when he was “dead” (John 11:14). Paul speaks of believers who have “fallen asleep” in the Lord (1 Thes. 4:13; cf. 1 Cor. 15:51). Yet, in other places, the Bible speaks of persons being conscious in the presence of God after they die (cf. 2 Cor. 5:8; Phil. 1:23; Rev. 6:9).

Psalm 110 – Does this passage predict Jesus?

Problem: The NT authors quote Psalm 110 more than any other chapter in the OT.[1] But, are the NT authors mishandling this passage? Lets’ consider a few of the claims of the critics.

Psalm 109:8 – How does this passage predict Jesus?

Problem: Peter said, “the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit foretold by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus” (Acts 1:16). Later, he quotes Psalm 69:26 and 109:8 to support this. If Judas’ decision to betray Christ was predicted in the OT, then doesn’t this eliminate his freewill?
