2 Peter 1:1 – Does this passage support the deity of Christ?

CLAIM: Peter writes, “Simon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ” (2 Pet. 1:1). Does this support Christ’s deity?

RESPONSE: This passage does support the deity of Christ. Grammatically, this must modify the person of Jesus Christ. The same grammatical construction is used in verse 11 (“Entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ…”). If Jesus is the “Lord and Savior” in verse 11, then he must be the “God and Savior” in verse 1. This passage follows the same grammatical construction of Titus 2:13.

“Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ: (2 Peter 1:1)”
