{"id":9692,"date":"2020-11-27T10:23:53","date_gmt":"2020-11-27T15:23:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/?p=9692"},"modified":"2020-11-27T10:30:20","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T15:30:20","slug":"mark-68-did-jesus-tell-his-disciples-to-take-a-staff-or-not","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/mark-68-did-jesus-tell-his-disciples-to-take-a-staff-or-not\/","title":{"rendered":"Mark 6:8 &#8211; Did Jesus tell His disciples to take a staff or not?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Can take a staff<\/p>\n<p>(Mark 6:8) &#8211; &#8220;and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nCannot take a staff<\/p>\n<p>(Matthew 10:9-10) &#8211; &#8220;Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, 10or a bag for your journey, or even two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for the worker is worthy of his support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(Luke 9:3) &#8211; &#8220;And He said to them, &#8220;Take nothing for your journey, neither a staff, nor a bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have two tunics apiece.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are no textual variants in these verses in the Greek manuscripts that would bear upon this issue regarding the staff.\u00a0 The word for &#8220;take&#8221; in both Mark 6:8 and Luke 9:3 is airo. \u00a0In Matthew 10:9, the word for &#8220;acquire&#8221; is ktaomai. \u00a0Each account is preceded by the raising of the dead girl so the context of each is the same.\u00a0 It is possible that there is a textual variation not yet known.\u00a0 Yet, this is not an acceptable explanation I would take since it is based on a lack of proof.\u00a0 How then can this difficulty be reconciled?<\/p>\n<p>The best explanation I can offer is that Matthew clarifies the issue by telling the disciples to not acquire anything more than what they already had.\u00a0 It is possible that the &#8220;take&#8221; of Mark and Luke can be interpreted to mean acquire, but I think this is a weak explanation.\u00a0 Nevertheless, each verse is saying that the disciples are to go as they are and\u00a0to not take provisions&#8211;just trust the Lord.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can take a staff (Mark 6:8) &#8211; &#8220;and He instructed them that they should take nothing for their journey, except a mere staff; no bread, no bag, no money in their belt.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[22],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9692","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-bible-errors","no-thumb"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9692","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=9692"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9692\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=9692"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=9692"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=9692"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
