{"id":22490,"date":"2025-03-09T17:30:19","date_gmt":"2025-03-09T21:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/?p=22490"},"modified":"2025-03-09T17:30:19","modified_gmt":"2025-03-09T21:30:19","slug":"luke-2328-crossed-messages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/luke-2328-crossed-messages\/","title":{"rendered":"Luke 23:28 &#8211; Crossed Messages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong> Why do the inscriptions on Jesus\u2019s cross differ among the four gospels?<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>Solution:<\/strong> The relevant passages are:<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 27:37<br \/>\nAnd they put up over His head the accusation written against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.<\/p>\n<p>Mark 15:26<br \/>\nAnd the inscription of His accusation was written above: THE KING OF THE JEWS.<br \/>\nLuke 23:38<br \/>\nAnd an inscription also was written over Him in letters of Greek, Latin, and Hebrew: THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.<br \/>\nJohn 19:19<br \/>\nNow Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.<br \/>\nThere is no reason to suppose that all four of these verses can\u2019t be true concerning the inscriptions on the cross. John (John 19:20) tells us that the charge against Jesus was written in three different languages: Greek, Latin, and Hebrew. Since Matthew\u2019s audience was mainly Jewish he likely quoted the Hebrew inscription (the common language of Palestine): \u201cTHIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.\u201d Since Luke\u2019s audience was mainly the Gentiles he likely quoted the Greek inscription-\u201cTHIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John mentions that Pilate wrote an inscription (likely someone wrote it for him), and since Latin was the official language of the Romans, John likely quoted the Latin inscription:\u201cJESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.\u201d Mark could have quoted any of the inscriptions, but merely abbreviated his version to the most relevant portion of the inscription: \u201cTHE KING OF THE JEWS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although all four inscriptions are slightly different in English, they all contain the statement, \u201cTHE KING OF THE JEWS.\u201d This was the charge brought by the Jewish leaders against Jesus in the Roman trials (Luke 23:2), and by itself is sufficient to describe Jesus\u2019s \u201ccrime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the content of the four inscriptions is identical, and the minor differences can be attributed to the language of the inscription being quoted by the author or the author\u2019s liberty to quote the part of the sign that he thought was sufficient in his historical account of the events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Problem: Why do the inscriptions on Jesus\u2019s cross differ among the four gospels?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[22,8,27],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-22490","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-bible-errors","category-bible-study","category-bible-teaching","no-thumb"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22490","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=22490"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/22490\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=22490"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=22490"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=22490"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
