{"id":19720,"date":"2024-03-16T11:48:42","date_gmt":"2024-03-16T15:48:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/?p=19720"},"modified":"2024-03-16T11:48:42","modified_gmt":"2024-03-16T15:48:42","slug":"ezekiel-1820-does-god-ever-punish-one-person-for-anothers-sin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pathway2truth.com\/wp\/ezekiel-1820-does-god-ever-punish-one-person-for-anothers-sin\/","title":{"rendered":"Ezekiel 18:20 &#8211; Does God ever punish one person for another\u2019s sin?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Problem:<\/strong> Ezekiel says clearly God does not punish the sons for their fathers\u2019 sins, but that \u201cthe soul who sins shall die [for its own sins].\u201d However, in Exodus 20:5 we are informed that God visits \u201cthe iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations.\u201d These seem flatly contradictory.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<strong>Solution:<\/strong> Ezekiel is speaking of the guilt of the father\u2019s sin never being held against the sons, but Moses was referring to the consequences of the fathers\u2019 sins being passed on to their children. Unfortunately, if a father is a drunk, the children can suffer abuse and even poverty. Likewise, if a mother has contracted AIDS from drug use, then her baby may be born with AIDS. But, this does not mean that the innocent children are guilty of the sins of their parents.<\/p>\n<p>Further, even if the Exodus passage implied that moral guilt was somehow also visited on the children, it would only be because they too, like their fathers, had sinned against God.
