Rom 7:1-3 – Why does Paul compare the Law to marriage?

Problem: Some interpreters claim that the Law died, so we aren’t under the law anymore.

Solution: The Law does not die. Jesus did not come to get rid of the Law (Mt. 5:17). The Law is still there. We shouldn’t try to read into Paul’s illustration too much. The purpose of Paul’s illustration is to explain that death breaks the contract of the law. That’s all. Paul is simply asking, “When is a marriage invalid?” Naturally, we know that marriage is binding “until death do we part.” Since we died with Christ on the Cross, we are freed from the binding of the Law.

“Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man. (Rom 7:1-3)
